On January 30, 1933, Hitler came to power in Germany. On February 27, after a mysterious fire burned down the Reichstag, stormtroopers took to the street attacking opponents of the Nazis as well as individual Jews. The Nazis opened the Dachau concentration camp, where thousands of opponents of the regime, as well as Jews, were sent. On April 1, a one-day boycott was called of all Jewish business in Germany. Soon after, Jews were fired from their jobs in the courts, in the universities and other professions throughout Germany. The Nazis had begun their campaign in earnest to force the Jews out of German society.
